Something that has really bothered me is HyperTerminal: "I plug it up to the PC, but HyperTerminal shows garbage." I, too, have had that problem. I spent an unknown amount of time trying to find a bug with my code, and it turned out to be HyperTerminal. I've seen it happen to at least a dozen students. HyperTerminal is very buggy, and I don't recommend that anyone use it.
Instead, use TeraTerm Pro if you're using Windows. I like Minicom on Unixy systems. I have used Zterm on Macintosh System 7 and Mac OS X in the past.

People actually use hyperterminal? I don't think I met a single person who did outside of simply testing to see if they could get a dial tone.
Yeah. I used to use it at IBM. Of course, I was doing modem tests.
Most people that I know that attempt to use it are attempting to communicate with a device using RS/EIA-232 serial.
